Abstract

Hindi Dalit autobiographies serve as an important medium to express the experiences of the Dalit community within social and cultural contexts. The language used in these autobiographies not only reflects personal experiences but also mirrors the broader social and cultural struggles. This research paper presents a detailed linguistic analysis of the language expressed in select Hindi Dalit autobiographies. The central argument of the study is that Dalit autobiographies are not merely documents of personal struggle; they also construct a new aesthetic and politics of language—where language itself carries the pain, resistance, and identity of caste-based experiences that mainstream literary discourse has long marginalized. By analyzing key autobiographical works such as Apne-Apne Pinjre by Mohandas Naimishray, Joothan by Omprakash Valmiki, and Mera Bachpan Mere Kandhon Par by Balbhadra Ram, the study demonstrates how their vocabulary, idioms, syntax, and narrative style linguistically express the structures of caste oppression and the emergence of Dalit consciousness. The paper concludes that the language of Dalit autobiography is a "language of resistance"—one that not only exposes the limitations of casteist linguistic traditions but also initiates a more inclusive and human-centered linguistic discourse. The linguistic study reveals that the language used in Dalit autobiographies serves as a powerful medium of social struggle, identity, and expression, contributing to a deeper understanding of these dimensions in Hindi literature.
